Tate's Hell State Forest Vortex

Tate's Hell State Forest Vortex

  • Vortex Type: Paranormal

Legend has it that the Florida forest's unusual name came from a story about Cebe Tate, a homesteader that got lost in the woods in the mid 1870s. Cebe had made a deal with a local medicine man for prosperity and good health. Cebe promised the medicine man one pig every year that he had good fortune. For years Cebe prospered and he began to think that life was good because of his hard work and not superstition. When he refused to pay the medicine man, he was told that his life would soon be hell. Not long after, Tate ventured into the woods with his hunting dogs, but they became separated when his dogs chased after a panther. Cebe was missing for seven days and seven nights before staggering into a clearing 25 miles from his home, near Carrabelle. He lived only long enough to say to a passerby "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell" before collapsing dead.
