Vortex Type: Paranormal
In the heart of Tombstone, Arizona, the Bird Cage Theatre isn’t just a relic of the Old West—it’s a living, breathing echo chamber of the past. This infamous saloon-turned-theatre-turned-brothel is a must-visit hotspot for paranormal enthusiasts.
Opened in 1881, the Bird Cage was once described by the New York Times as "the roughest, bawdiest, and most wicked night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast". It hosted everything from vaudeville acts to high-stakes poker games, and its walls—still riddled with over 140 bullet holes—bear witness to the violence and vice that once ruled the night.
One of the most gruesome tales involves a woman named Margarita, who met a grisly end at the hands of a jealous rival known as Little Gertie the Gold Dollar. Legend has it that Gertie, enraged by Margarita’s flirtation with her lover, stabbed her in the chest with a stiletto hidden in her garter. Some say Margarita’s spirit still lingers, her presence felt in cold spots and sudden, inexplicable chills.
The Bird Cage Theatre has been featured on Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files. Vortex Hunters also had an overnight investigation there. One of my favorite investigations ever. We had some interesting results which are detailed in the video below.
